It also strengthens the suspicion that this region may have been the source of most of the characteristics that make the United States peculiarly American. A practice originating and flourishing along the growing edge of the culture area that was clearly the intellectual pacemaker of the young Republic spread vigorously outward to the farther reaches of the expanding region. Eventually, like many another idea and innovation of similar nativity, only a few of which have been studied, it diffused throughout the country and became continental in scope.
